I think AT&T just got owned.
Today, many people received a Court-Ordered Legal Notice from the "AT&T DSL Speed Settlement Administrator" which noted:
"You are Included in a Class Action Settlement Involving Your DSL Service"
It states:
Quote:
A proposed Settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit alleging that AT&T failed to deliver DSL Service to its customers at the speeds promised. AT&T strongly denies these allegations but has agreed to settle to avoid further litigation. You are included in the Settlement because you purchased DSL service from AT&T* after March 31, 1994. You have legal rights and options, such as submitting a claim for benefits, excluding yourself, or objecting to the Settlement.
|
It then goes on to list the benefits that you [read: the people who received the piece of mail] can get if they submit a claim.
I just thought it was funny. It brightened up my day, and reminded me of the times I was constantly on the phone with numerous AT&T employees back in the day, complaining about my service they decided to never fix. (I considered myself allowed to complain, seeing how 9 phone calls [at about 2-3 hours each] and $300 later they still hadn't fixed it.)
Now onto you, the readers:
What are your thoughts on this?
What service do you have?
Did you receive this letter?
Come, chat amongst yourselves.

Been using Cable Internet here at home. No issues outside of wireless problems, which seem to have faded after doing a hardware update... Go figure.
As for the settlement, this does not surprise me for some reason. We are talking AT&T, which, in my opinion, has gotten too big for its own good. Ah, well.

I'd take anything over Verizon. Fios was nice, but not worth being on the phone for at least 8 hours every month or so trying to fix their stupid admin errors. I think the weakest link in my chain is probably actually my wireless router...

They may have gotten big, but their customer service still sucks. They seriously need to work on it and it would have been nice if they stopped transferring my call to Bum-fudge Egypt.

A while back, I actually switched from AT&T to Cc-Cable. It's nice. 30mb-down/10mb-up gets what I need done.

Looks like a slap on the wrist.. as well as relying on human nature - most ppl by nature are lazy and won't respond to the letter about this.. and thus they will waver any rights to any monies or any other legal action..
As for the compensation amount - lolz. $2.90 per month you can prove you were being short-changed in speed.. thus for 10 years of bad service.. you'll get $348 if you can prove it.. and $240 if you can't prove it...
Not really much, and yes I know it will add up if everyone responds.. but as I said, it's a gamble playing on human nature - ppl will be too lazy to respond, or respond like my point.. "pfft, a lousy $2-200.. not worth wasting my time"... so AT&T offer's a garbage offering.. and prays that ppl will just do nothing and waver their rights for monies or further legal action.

Hmm I didn't receive one of these letters, as of today. I've been a subsriber for a pretty long time, through various name changes that today is AT&T/Yahoo.
I'm on the West Coast though, wonder if it only covers certain territories.

Well, considering today's economy, and how hard-up some people are/can get for money...might be otherwise.

I've been using AT&T for a couple years now, and while it isn't that fast I've had to deal with it because the Broadband here is way to expensive, and there's no other alternative. I haven't had a real problem with the speed, but now that it's brought to my attention, it feels like my internet should be faster than it is.
